The Day, Wound Tight

The day is banked at the shadow line: sunlight arrives in bars, is ruled off dead at the terminator, and survives past it only as light wound tight inside the flywheel.

Artistic imagining, not real hardware: a constructivist composition split by a red diagonal shadow line. On the cream daylight side, black and red bars of sunlight press against the line beneath a flat red sun disc. Past the line, in a black field above a darkened Earth, a spacecraft built of slab shapes carries a glowing flywheel of nested cream and red rings, and a spiral of light winds across the line into its hub. Dim ember dots trace the orbit onward through the dark.
An artistic imagining, not existing hardware: a small spacecraft slides across the terminator into Earth's shadow and lives on what it banked. On the day side, sunlight arrives in bars and is ruled off at the red shadow line; past the line, only the spacecraft's flywheel glows, the afternoon's light wound into nested rings. In low orbit night comes every 90 minutes, and storage is the held breath until sunrise. Day 5 of the poweringspace.com Image of the Day series.
